In laymen's lingo, whenever you store data to your computer firm drive, information about where on earth it is located (that is what sector or sectors the profile is saved to) is save in a information file call a File Allocation Table.
When you delete a file the record itself is not deleted per se, but to some extent its entry in the File Allocation table is altered.
For example, voice you had a report called Projects, and you delete it.
The profile allocation table which would have have Projects in it will immediately have $rojects [The first memo has be replaced with a $ sign].
This $ sign tell the computer when allocation space that the space where projects is stored is presently available, which means when you install a latest program or save a exotic file, the computer can overwrite your ripened file call Projects, or part of that directory, if the new database is smaller in size that Projects be.
File recovery sofware and/or hardware is capable of trawling through the File Allocation table, and also your virtual drive (i.e. the Page file) to attempt to restructure a deleted profile, or completely recover it, if its never been overwritten.
If you travel the software way for recovery, after generally its a suitable idea not to install such software on the drive you are trying to recover fdeleted files from, because the computer when allocating space for the recovery software may overwrite the hugely file you are attempting to set free.

To do background recovery without the possibility of delete what your after, you need professional comfort. It requires either an optional computer or another harddrive with special software, that isn't completely user friendly.
You can "roll the dice" and use a program that just runs on your computer, but you would be potentially "overwriting" the background you are after.
