Business license needed for information recovery?
I'm considering opening a background recovery business from my home, with possibly expanding it to also selling software I've written. Interaction near clients will be done by mail, beside payment any being sent by post or via Paypal. There will be no foot traffic in my home, to avoid zoning issues.
I want to do this rightfully but I'm unsure how to go something like it. All the start-up guides I've read assume foot traffic in the home and a physical product to put on the market.
The county business license form I've obtained requires a state rates ID number. The state tax ID form seem to assume a brick and mortar business with foot traffic and physical products, so some of the question don't seem to apply to the type of business I'll be doing.
Can someone make a contribution me some tips on what I need to do, or point me to a guide that better applies to what I'm doing? Thanks.

You don't entail a business license to run this type of business, unless you will have a storefront (which you said you won't). I enjoy not seen a state license this type of business to operate, unlike daycares or retail stores or contractors
What you requirement is to register your business, which is a different process from business licensing. If this is a sole proprietorship, you will register your business within your county/city clerk's office. If Corporation, LLC or partnership, you register next to the state.
When you register your business, you will also file for your fictitious designation (assumed name or DBA Doing business as) if you will call for your business a name save for your personal given name
