recovery from what? a harddrive, if it can be recovered, you can just put it contained by a new computer, if that doesn't work, it's unreadable.
a scratched cd or dvd? depends how scratched, usually the program will work fine, but a disk repairer will work better.
blu-ray? I've be told you can use fine grain sandpaper to grind away some of the plastic coating until the undamaged disk is down to the level of the gash, since the actual data is underneath about a quarter centimeter of unneeded plastic. (not sure in the region of my measurement, but it's blank until nearly half process through the disk from the bottom, and the paint on top is useless
it isn't how effective facts recovery software is as most is very well-run it's more a case of is the facts you're trying to recover being written over if it have then you can't recover if but if it hasn't the probability are very suitable
