Data recovery on a seagate 500gb ext. harddrive?

holy crap, i am so angry, my 500gb seagate was running fine, afterwards it started humming very loudly, made a full-size clunk, and does not work. seagate wants 1,400$ (!) to recover my 120GB of lost notes. is there a cheaper notes recovery service anyone knows of? Or is near anyway to make a broken (it rattle loudly if you shake it, its fried.) hard drive usable to recover facts?

Thanks for the help!

Hi I used to be contained by data recovery for years and i.e. the normal price. Problem is your head are hitting the platters. Heads float on a cushion of air and read information from the platters. The clicking is due to the heads not human being able to read so they only just fly around and hit the "stoppers" which keep it from flying stale the platter. Problem is suddend clicks stop air flow and basis the heads to crash down. Only process is to replace the headstack which means buying another drive to replace the parts. And even consequently there is no 100% guarantee it will work.
If you've get a couple of years worth of work on the drive, and need to go and get the data, past you entirely give up on a thorny drive look into 'Spinrite' by Gibson Research.
It often fixes masses HDD physical problems and /or recovers data.
