Answers:
you will lose everything (unless you've partitioned a d: and dumped it there)
the recovery disc will try to restore everything to when you first got it (factory settings)
Doesn't it come next to a number that looks like 0x0000000A? The number will report to you more if you want to try and fix that error.
BTW AFAIK John N is bullshitting. When you reinstall Vista over the current install, be sure to NOT repartition and you will only lose your installed programs. Documents should be nearby.
If you want to be really really sure, add your drive as a slave within another PC or try a Live CD ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_liv… ).
I regard maybe SystemRescueCD might be a fitting one ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SystemRescu… ).
It might be hardware problem and afte recovery you will have BSOD again. Before reinstalling Windows label sure it's just softeware issue. You will loose adjectives your data from the complicated drive, becauseduring installation disc is foformatted and everything on the disc is erased.
