Vista OS Recovery Back up Disk Fails?

i have tried to do a vertebrae up 'Windows Vista OS' recovery disk for my friends laptop but when it comes to inserting the blank DVD RW disk or CD RW disk it say.. 'please insert a blank disk'.. These disk are blank but it won't let me verbs with the back-up... Can anyone explain why this is scheduled? Thanks
