I've been told that I enjoy a missing file that won't consent to me boot [NTLDR] and that I should insert the recovery cd for the laptop [which I didn't make], but if I do find one, or I insert one for windows vista instead of XP does it aim that I will loose all the information on the laptop?

It shouldn't. You should be given the likelihood of reinstalling Windows (as opposed to *reformatting* and reinstalling). As long as adjectives you do is reinstall, it should repair the boot sector.
