What exactly does a PC Recovery disk do?

I am having problems near my new PC and am considering using the recovery disks it come with, but I am worried that it will unknot all of the program installations I perform. I used up my last McAfee license on this PC, and I do not want the recovery disks to remove McAfee because I will not know how to reinstall it otherwise without buying a integral new suite. Help?
Answers:
The recovery cd is used for installing window and re-installing windows, theres an opportunity on the cd just to repair window, none of your programs you have installed will be lost but you will if you re-install window where it will format the harddrive
A recovery disc is deeply the OEM Windows installation disc, which lets you carry out various tasks surrounded by an attempt to recover control over Windows, or re-install it completely.
