You can other use system restore from a safe boot. Back up files you protection about.

Shut your system down, reboot holding down F8, and when you achieve the dos screen click on system restore.

I sugest you call round the Windows Knowledge Base, problems with Service Pack two be not uncommon, (Particularly on elder versions of XP be famously problematic.)

Good luck, and get habituated with CONTROL PANEL. Dont only run there when stuff is messed up. Learn where on earth the (fix messed up) controls are.

The Help option is a coaching tool, use it.
The Windows disk is INCLUDED in the Recovery Disks

HOWEVER!, *IF* you do a system recovery it will restore your computer to the strange "Out of the box" state! Every update, file, program you've added or installed, etc wil be lost!!
I in recent times did this to 2 comps running XP.. The disks will reset your machine to the orginal factory setting. Don't requirement the XP disk. In fact the HP teck chew me out for changeing the factory OS.. The component will allow only one copy to be made no more so safe and sound guard the disks. You can by one at the HP store just follow the links.. Cost is 12.00
