Recovery Disk Toshiba L300 Laptop?

My girl friend recently bought a Toshiba L300-1BW, she immediately has a trojan horse. She didn't craft a recovery disk when she bought it like i told her too, i be wondering if i use a recovery disk to set it back to factory settings will this remove virus etc. and also, if i create the disk now WITH the virus on it will the virus be copied over when i re-install vista and also after some research i hear you dont need a disk and can do it from the firm drive some how? is this possible with this type of laptop?
