Can another pc's recovery disk work for my laptop?
My cousin has alike laptop as me and it has vista. I be wondering if I made a recovery disk with it will it work on my notebook? I downgraded to xp then go to linux but I want to try vista again. Will this work? Also when I downgraded I accidently removed recovery on mine that's why im asking.

You should be able to use your cousin's recovery disk. There is nought in the disk specifically specific to to the computer you use it on. However it might be specific to a make or model - classification it will only work on Dell computers for example.
What make the disk "unique" to you is the activation code on the sticker on your PC. You may need to enter that code at some point surrounded by the install to get the disc to work for your computer.
If the disk fails, next contact the PC's manufacturer. Usually for a small excise ($10-$20 to cover shipping and handling) they will send you a replacement Restore compact disc.
I doubt it, you need the recovery files on yours for the disc to work.
Are you sure they are delete?
On my daughter`s laptop, the recovery files are on a separate drive (d)

A recovery disc is not the same as a window disc, you DO need the files for a recovery disc, which take the laptop back to factory settings and reinstalls adjectives the software that came near the laptop.
The windows Vista DVD will install, it will collect a copy of your xp files in a folder call windows old-fashioned.
You can probably get a copy of a vista disc from microsoft, as you hold the serial number and are entitled to use it.
I usually delete the "windows old" folder from programme files, after installing Vista, as it take a lot of space on the easier said than done drive.

Only just realised you`re on linux at the moment.
I bought a cheap notebook a couple of years ago with linux installed on c drive. (the solitary drive)
Thought I could easily format and reinstall from xp disc,but no, the disc wouldn`t nouns, or some error message, I can`t remember now.
I have to use software to overwrite the disc, booted from f disk, or acronis, not sure which, it was ok after that and I manage to install xp.
May be different next to yours.
Do you have linux on a different drive? or possibly you`re running it from live cd? Source(s): I`ve installed vista on quite a few xp computers.

If you hold the same be paid and model then it should work, although you'll enjoy to use your own key. But the recovery dividing wall generally merely has drivers for the focused hardware it's on, so that will be the biggest issue.
If you have a different operating system (you right to be heard your cousin has Vista and you hold XP) then it will not work.
However, if your laptop originally come with Vista, and you own that unlock key, afterwards absolutely it will work, you basically need to create sure you put that key within when it comes up. (This may be on a sticker on your computer bottom).
Depending on who your laptop maker is, you can also contact them and they can correspondence you a recovery disk. I know that Dell offers this. Source(s): Personal experience
