File recovery on Linux?

I've heard you can recover files delete on Linux. So my question is....

Suppose someone is using Linux, next to 'reiserfs' filesystem, and if he/she deletes some files from some wallet manager (e.g. Nautilus) using Shift+Del key. Then, typically how long will the files physically stay on the hard disk up to that time they are overwritten by other data and hence become irrecoverable? Would it be days, weeks, months?

Assume that the computer is person used normally everyday for nearly 4-5 hours even after the files are deleted.
