Recovering notes on USB external HDD?

My usb HDD external was used to store everything on it ... music, video etc. Now my OS can detect it, but can not read it and says it wants to be formatted. It was working fine, and I do not want to erase everything on it by formatting. How can I recover the facts, without formatting? Are within any free programs?

If that doesn't work then you could other take the covering apart and put the drive inside your computer.
