Can corrupted files on an external mass storage device be recovered short losing any information?

when i try to access my external storage device i get the message 'the fle or directory is corrupted and unreadable'. can anybody please relate me what i can do to recover the data? the device is contained by good condition and its not a armour of virus (i guess i did not stop it properly). I havent backed up the background on this drive and its vital.
Answers:
There may be a recovery program on the internet to download, try a survey, but i would say that in need a program, this is not possible
What you necessitate is a program similar to Spinrite in the links down below.

The other one suggested above is for delete files and where corruption isn't an issue.

Spinrite and others of it's personality may actually know how to recover the data.

Also, if your background is VERY valuable, you may want to bite the bullet and reimburse $500 or whatever for a professional to manually painstakingly manually look over the actual folders and data on the drive to recover as much as possible. However I don't mull over this will be required as it sounds from what you're saying similar to you just switched sour the power or unplugged your drive before performing the disconnect procedure. If it's formated near NTFS there's a good break you will be able to recover most or adjectives of the bad areas.
