There are lots free utilities that can wipe drives completely (even to the Dept. of Defense standard). Even after this kind of wipe, within theory, it would be possible beside the proper equipment and enough time to still recover some background. I don't know of anyone other than the Pentagon/CIA/FBI who might own the means to complete such a feat. For the most cog these free utilities are good satisfactory for the average person ... unless you're carrying around state secret. Try this software, it's very effortless to use.

low level formatting erases a not easy disk beyond conventional recovery, short of actually destroying the disk. Forensic recovery methods use the not here over bits and pieces of an erased disk to form a recovery by comparing the core binary code (the bits left behind) and predicting the missing parts to complete the profile. For example, It's not like on CSI Miami where on earth the pictures come back, adjectives that is recovered is the information that tell them there be pictures there, and principal information about the picture. There is software that erases facts, then writes over it frequent times to eliminate the possibility of forensic recovery, by eliminate the possibility to predict what is missing, if you really need to hoard something.
