How to recover facts from firm disc?

I have a desktop beside two hard disc. The primary one have the windows xp operating system which is password protected to login the system. This drive spoilt to boot due to some unknown reasons and could not boot from xp cd surrounded by cdrom as well. I own some data contained by it. I changed the hard drive beside a new one and XP installed surrounded by new one. The defective frozen disc was placed as seconadary and I be able to detect the disc. But I am not competent to open the folders containing my notes. It says access is denied. Possibly because it be password protected. How do I retrieve my data? Please backing.
