Recovering background past its sell-by date dieing external rugged drive?

I think my western digital external easier said than done drive is dieing. I was wondering if its possible to break unseal the casing and put the drive surrounded by a new travel case to access it? or will I need to transport it somewhere like geek squad to recover information?
Answers:
Have you tried taking it out of the casing and installing it contained by the Computer and booting it as a secondary drive, afterwards try to drag your data across. If that don't work WD have some low level formatting software on the pattern that you can download and try to fix the drive.
