The drive is apparently unreadable in Windows and keep making a strange humming sound when connected to the PC.

What can I do to recover the files from the drive?
Answers:
Try connecting it to another computer, if it doesnt work looks resembling it's your bad morning. You will have to format the HD for it to work again,
You should try a recovery program, approaching Recuva, to get your files bad the bad HD. If it's making a terrifying sound and won't even be accredited by your PC, you could try more delicate (and expensive) methods, such as switching the platters (the disks beside the info) into a HD with a working motor/etc. Realistically, that's something you hold a professional do for you, though. Good luck!
If it's making the funky noise, theee are two possibilities..

1) the skipper has crashed and is steadlily machining away the disk surface.. this is usually a sharp grinding noise, and cannot be recovered,

2) The driver movement is departed, but the disk and head are OK... surrounded by which case it may be possible to remove the disk, and put it within another drive... but this is not a job you can do at home. You'd stipulation to have it done by professionals, and that will cost you a ot of money - in good health into 4 figures
