How can I fix my rock-hard drive next to unpromising sector (probably) and also recover most notes?

I have an external Western Digital HDD (500 GB) and every time I try to wager on up the files off it to my regular tough drive it kinda stops working. Sometimes it says it can't find any files, even though it is already displaying the thumbnails of adjectives the files. Sometimes it can't see any files at all except for the terribly first folders on the HD. It seems to be getting progressively worse and I am afraid to keep hold of plugging it in to brand it read the files because I don't want to increase to problems. On the hard drive information it say that there are 465 GBs total but I do believe to be precise a little on the low side from what I have at the beginning. I run disk checker thing a couple of times but I did that after some files already could not be read so that when I run it it said it could not fix the problem. Disk Keeper couldn't either. Test Disk used to know how to read it but now it can't I don't ruminate (but I don't really know if I am using that properly). So is there a program that can bear all my files (or most, I expect I hold lost some) and copy them with as little diskusage as possible? Secondarily I am appreciably going to completely reformat the Drive and I wanted to know if possibly I would be able to recover files after I did that next to a unerase program? Anyway anything that could help me I'd appreciate, and I might be using testdisk impolitely so if that can help I inevitability some help next to that as well. And also this is adjectives assuming there is zilch wrong with the hardware but I don't believe that in that is a problem in that department, but logically I could be completely wrong and if there is a hardware problem I guess to be precise it then because I'm not paying any money to recover the files. Again gratitude in credit.

Your computer needs to be NTFS to see the significant hdd, and to use files larger than 2 gig. Same next to the external.

Fat32 to NTFS
===========
you can change the directory system with out losing the facts

To Check your hard drive, flash drive or external complicated drive do this. They ALL need to be NTFS to knob today's large size hardware.

Open my computer, right click the drive >properties. In the pop up it will read out FAT or NTFS in the folder system. If its FAT you need to transmutation it to NTFS to handle generous files and drive sizes.

On XP click start >help and support >type contained by convert.exe to read about it.
Do it surrounded by this order:
1, Open my computer> right click the drive >properties >tools >check presently >tick both boxes to clear the disk of any errors, then:
2. defrag the drive (tools)
3. Enter the convert command resembling this:
say the usb drive is F:
Click Start > Run > convert F: /fs:ntfs /v /nosecurity /x

same for your C drive. (paste above and translate the drive letter)

4. do a defrag again.

I have done this closely and never lost any data. Just don't interfere or bring risks. The biggest risk is a power failure while its doing it. It doesn't pinch long. If you find it doesn't do the conversion, then run Chkdisk to fix errors after try again.
