I inevitability assistance recovering facts on my not easy drive?

When I was at my aunts house my laptop froze. I tried to restart it but it say something like "Cannot read OS" or something close to that. So i had a OS installation disc with me and i installed it. I didnt wipe the rock-hard drive... I put the OS on the same wall as my old system hopeing it would save my data. When i started my computer next to the new OS i looked at the files and it wasnt at hand. BUT it said that i only have 2 Gigs of hard drive space gone. I unhid all the files and it wasnt anywhere. But i know that its still at hand cause on a 36 Gig thorny drive i only hold 2 Gigs left and i havent downloaded any software. If you know of a program that i can download and it can read the other portion of my computers partition i would be so greatful. It have over 12,000 songs on it and i REALLY want them back. Thanks

PS: Its a Windows XPS and i installed a Windows XPS on it.

It sounds approaching your files are there, but you may simply be looking within the wrong place. When you reinstall Windows and log in for the first time, it creates a tentative user profile, and a new place to store adjectives of your files.

Take a look at the old location, typically lower than c:\documents and setting\(user name)\My Documents, where (user name) is the identify of the account you used to log surrounded by to. Dig around in in attendance and you should fine them, just formulate sure to move them to the new My Documents so you hold quick access to them.

Hope it works for you, you will requirement a external dive to save the notes to in command to complete the recovery.
You overwrote all your files beside the OS.
You should have used the fixboot or fixmbr nouns instead of reinstalling the OS.

Try this as a longshot: http://www.piriform.com/recuva
If you chose the option "Leave the file system intact" while you were installing, your registry will still own been cleared. This make the computer APPEAR to have none of the dated data on it. If you are looking for your ripened documents, you can go into C:\My Documents and Settings\<outdated user name>. In that folder you can get to stuff on your desktop, contained by your My Documents folder, etc. The progams you had are still in that (though thanks to the freshly wipe registry, many may not work and require a reinstall). Just look within C:\Program Files.
