My guess is that your newer operating system expects the format to be of a newer type.

Boot to DOS by Pressing F8 when Windows logo shows up I think (or try Run and type "cmd" to capture to dos prompt windows).

Then use the dos commands to see if you can read the strong drive. You'll want to look those up on how to copy the files. Once you get the files moved bad that you want, then you can reformat it and use it approaching any hard drive.
If making it a slave drive does not work.

It's a antediluvian drive, there a casual that the root system is corrupted and that might be the reason that Windows desires to format it. If it worked in the weak computer, do a file verbs to the new system. Another means of access would be to use a disk recovery tools, such as Norton Disk Doctor. These tools are dangerous contained by that some files could be lost forever and should only be used as a second to final attempt at recovery. If it is some very central data, you might hold to look into the disk recovery companies.

Another method might be to use a USB IDE hard drive adapter which would allow you to plug contained by the drive through your USB port instead of installing it internally. This way, you can try using the a variety of tools to recover the data. If the information cannot be recovered through normal channel, you might need to use a tool such as Norton Disk Editor to browse the actual bytes stored on the disk and recover the background that way, but to be precise a time consuming process and should only be attempted if you really have need of to.

Assuming that it formatted in some revision of the FAT file system, you possibly can use a Linux system to attempt to read it and copy the background to a USB flash drive.

In summery, not knowing the exact problem with the drive, it not easy to say the best method to use to recover the information. These are just some suggestions that might work.
use your latest drive as master, you might have to set the pullover in the stern of the drive, make your dated hard drive slave. that road you don't need to format the drive.

if you are using window 2000 then, you stipulation service pack 4 and add EnableBigLba registry switch and set the value to 1. No problem beside XP
