As far as I know if it's dead, you can't. In the adjectives, I suggest saving documents, pictures and music files, to other storage places, other after the computer. Such as flash drives, CD, or online storage for files and pictures. Because you never know when your computer will crash.
If the complicated drive doesn't spin up the only solution is to convey it to someone to get the background extracted (big $$)
If the hard drive merely won't work sometimes or something liek that you may be interested in messing near it using Linux. I have have many "dead" drives next to data that i recovered by tinkering beside them using Linux. Google up knoppix if you want to play with the conception.
