I would attempt a system restore.. Basically it rewinds your computer to what ever state your computer was set for on any hard to please date. Start.. All Programs.. Accessories.. System tools, System restore.
Unless you hold the SHIFT key when delete a file, your directory is never lost. However, if you uninstall the program that you used to create the file, it become next to impossible to find it unless you can find some program that you enjoy that also opens the form of file you can't find. This is why I check when getting spanking new software (or uninstalling unwanted software) to see whether I have any files that might be un-openable after I engender a software change.

Most Microsoft Word documents can also be open with WordPad. All WordPad documents can be open with Microsoft Word and Notepad. I notice that when I uninstalled the Nero CD burning software, some of the CD's I burned beside the software wouldn't play on my computer or any of the CD players I have.
