When I delete files past its sell-by date my flash drive, the space is not recovered.?

I had a flash drive, and although I delete everything off, it said that 1GB/1GB be used, and it was full. So I reformatted it [MS-DOS format], and get my 1GB back. But again, whenever I store a record on it and delete it, my space is not recovered. For example, I put a 4MB picture on it, then delete it, and now I still hold 4MB less space. Does anyone enjoy any idea what's going on here?
Maybe it's your computer? Try formating a different format. try another comp
put the files within folders, for some reason flash drives have problems reading size unless the files are in folders
"> dude which os do you use..... if you are using mac... when you delete it from the folder it does not capture deleted completely... in the past removing the flash drive empty the trash within your dock... then one and only it will be completely erased.

and if you are using a windows... thats peculiar it should not happen approaching that....
