Recovery software for USB Flash drive?

I was told within is a software program i can purchase that can recover files. i was working on a folder when i closed and wanted to amass changes it informed me to format, the computer would not read the Flash. i know if i reformat i'll lose everything, but can i really pay cheque something to recover?
