It sounds close to you might have done a Repair Install since you have to also install all foreign updates and SP2. If you did a Repair Install, it would not have artificial your personal settings or any installed programs. It just overwrites the XP Home beside a fresh copy. By trying to install programs on top of themselves, you'd most plausible get those error_install_failure messages.
If you hold your software install disks and they are still current (not expired) I'd go into your start menu, find the program, right click on it and look for the uninstall command. If you can't find the program within the menu, I'd look in the add/remove programs applet (click start > control panel > add/remove.) Scroll down, underline the program and click on remove. Once the program is removed you should be able to reinstall it minus problem.
If you can't find the program in the menu or the add/remove applet, you might own to do some detective work. You can do an advanced search for files and folders. Click start > flush > all files and folders. Type within the name of the program, look surrounded by My Computer, and under advanced option make sure you check stale all the mysterious options. If the dig out finds a file or folder, underline it and delete. Leave it in your recycle bin until you can reinstall the program and produce sure it's working properly. Hope some of this helps.
