From my recovery principal on my workstation, can I copy my recovery software to my external HD insdead of to a disc?

I understand I can build one copy of my recovery/operation system from my recovery manager on my laptop. I looked-for to know can I copy it to an external HD instead of coping it to a disc? Then copy it from the external HD to my new HD I am going to install.
